No libero: subs, a re-entry and a third time-out
A club set with no libero on either side. Record the substitutions and time-outs, and catch a starter coming back in the wrong position.
One libero: replacements, a libero serve and the wrong player back
Both teams use one libero for their middles. Keep the tracker, note where the away libero serves, and catch the wrong player coming back for the libero.
Two liberos under the 2026-27 rule: an exchange and a second serving spot
Home designates two liberos. Circle each on first entry, write nothing for the exchange, and catch the second libero trying to serve in a different position.
Serve order under USA Volleyball: who serves first after the side out
No libero and no requests, just rallies. Under USA Volleyball the receiving team's first server is the player in position II, so its first service box is under II.
Serve order under NFHS: the lineup is the serving order
Away serves first. Under NFHS the receiving team's first server is the player listed I, so both teams fill their service boxes from I.
The wrong server steps up (USA Volleyball)
Home's next server should be 9, but 12 goes back to serve. Flag the improper server; the rally goes to away and the serve order stays as written.
The last server serves again (NFHS, one libero)
After the side out, the player who served last time tries again. Catch it before you write anything, and keep both liberos on the tracker.
A substituted starter tries to serve
21 came in for 7 early in the set. When position IV comes round to serve, 7 walks back to the line. The server is whoever stands in IV now.
A long term of service and a quick side out
Home's first server runs off seven straight points, then the serve changes hands fast. The service box gets the team's score when each term ends.
Past 25: a set that ends 27 to 25
The set is 23 all. Keep marking the running score past 25, close the last term, and write the final points and the winner when the two point lead comes.
The deciding set is played to 15
Set five under NFHS, 11 all. The set ends at 15 with a two point lead, not 25. Close the last term and write the result.
A red card to the serving team ends its term
Home is serving when its number 7 gets a red card. Away scores the point and the serve, so home's service box closes and away rotates.
A long run of rallies with a libero on each side
Nothing illegal here: keep up with the running score, the service boxes and the forced libero exits as the middles rotate to the front row.
Subs in and starters back, both teams
A run of legal substitutions: bench players in for front row starters, the starters back later, and one request with two players. Write each under the position of the player leaving.
A bench player comes back in a new position (NFHS)
21 has played in position IV. Later the coach sends 21 in for 9, in position II. Flag it: a player may only come back in the position they played.
A starter comes back for the wrong player (USA Volleyball)
21 went in for 7 and 7 came back. Now 21 is sent in for 4, in position I. Each entry must be in the same position in the line-up, so flag it.
Out and straight back in the same dead ball
The coach swaps 21 in for 7, changes their mind and asks for 7 back before the next rally. Flag it: there has to be a rally first.
Two substitution requests in one dead ball (NFHS)
Away subs 16 for 17, then asks for another change before the serve. Under NFHS a second request in the same dead ball is simply denied: flag it and write nothing.
The 19th substitution (NFHS)
Home has made 17 substitutions. The 18th is legal and the scorer warns the second referee; the 19th is illegal and must be stopped.
The 16th substitution (USA Volleyball)
Home has made 14 substitutions. The 15th is the last one allowed. The 16th is an improper request: refused and written in the sanctions box as IR.
The libero sent in as a substitute
Before the libero has played, the coach asks for libero 1 in for 7 as an ordinary substitution. A libero only enters by libero replacement, so flag it.
A number that is not on the roster
Away asks for 31 in for 17. There is no 31 on the away roster: flag the illegal substitute.
Two players in one request, and both back
One request can bring on two players. Each is a substitution of its own: two entries, two ticks on the count.
A sub for the player the libero replaced
Libero 1 is in for 10. The coach asks for 21 in for 10. 10 is off the court only because of the libero, so this is not a substitution: flag it.
A substitute for the libero
The coach sends 21 in for libero 1. The libero is never substituted for: only the player the libero replaced comes back.
The libero sent in for a front row player
Home's libero heads in for 7, who is at left front. The libero only replaces back row players: flag it, then write the legal replacement that follows.
The libero back in the same dead ball
10 comes back for the libero, and before the serve the libero heads in again for 15. A rally has to be played first.
The libero serves for a middle blocker
When home's middle 12 rotates to serve, the libero leaves for the other middle and then replaces 12 to serve. Note the serving position on the tracker.
One libero, a second serving position
The libero served for 12 in position III. Later the libero replaces 10 in position VI and serves. Under USA Volleyball the replacement stands, but the serve is a rotational fault: flag the server.
The libero tracker records substitutions too
With a libero in, home also substitutes 21 for 7 and back. The tracker gets the entering number under the position, as the scoresheet does.
The wrong player comes back for the libero (NFHS)
The libero replaced 10. Now 15 tries to come on for the libero. Only 10 may: flag it, then write the legal return.
A player not designated as libero tries a libero replacement
Number 22 runs on for 10 the way a libero would. Only the libero designated for this set may: flag it.
The libero rotates toward the front row
The libero is in for 15 at left back. When home wins the serve back, 15's position rotates to the front row, so 15 must come back on.
Two liberos on each side: circles and exchanges
Both teams designate two liberos. Circle each libero the first time they enter, and write nothing on the tracker when one libero exchanges for the other.
The second libero goes on while the first is still in
Libero 1 is in for 10. Libero 2 heads in for 15. Only one libero may be on the court: the second must exchange with the first.
Both liberos serve, in the same spot
Libero 1 serves for 12 in position III. A full rotation later libero 2 serves for 12 too. That is legal: the liberos share one serving position.
An exchange in the dead ball the libero came on (USA Volleyball)
Libero 1 replaces 10 and, before the serve, libero 2 swaps in. There must be a completed rally between two libero replacements.
After an exchange, the replaced player comes back
Libero 1 in for 10, libero 2 exchanges in, then 10 comes back. The tracker reads 10, L, 10: the exchange itself is never written.
Time-outs at set point
23 to 24 and both coaches reach for their time-outs. Write each with the score, own team first, and keep the running score going to the end.
A third time-out at set point (NFHS)
Away takes two time-outs back to back at 23 to 24, then asks for a third. Flag it: the request is denied and charged as unnecessary delay.
A third time-out (USA Volleyball)
Home has used both time-outs and asks for another. It is an improper request: refused, written as IR, no penalty the first time.
Unnecessary delay twice in one set (NFHS)
Away tries an illegal substitute, then later a third time-out. The first is a yellow card warning, the second a red card: home gets the point.
A delay in set 2 after a warning in set 1 (USA Volleyball)
Home was given a delay warning in the first set. Delays count for the whole match, so home's illegal re-entry here is a delay penalty and a point for away.
A yellow card and a red card
Away's 17 gets a yellow card, then the home coach gets a red. Write both in the sanctions box; the red card gives away a point and the serve.
An improper request, then a delay (USA Volleyball)
Away asks for a second substitution in one interruption (improper request, IR), and later a third time-out. The second improper request is a delay warning.
